Eye Teaming is the ability to use both eyes together with accuracy. When the eyes don't "team", an individual consciously or unconsciously may suppress one eye. The brain may also suppress information from on eye which can cause a child to see double. This can have extreme consequences for learning. Research shows brain processing of visual input drops from approximately 80% using both eyes to 20% using one eye.
Signs that your child may have a problem with
Eye Teaming:
- Reads slowly or avoids reading
- Skipping lines or words and re-reading information
- Moves head while reading
- Covers or closes one eye when reading
- Tires or becomes easily frustrated with school work
- Leaves out letters or phrases when writing
- Writes up hill or down hill
- Aligns digits incorrectly or omits numbers
- Difficulty catching or hitting a ball
- Trips or bumps into things
- Hesitant with balance on a bike
Dana Schonhoff, MOTR/L and Aliza Soler, MOTR/L began developing the Center's Vision Treatment Program in 2007. They both received specialized training in the area to further the quality of care provided to the children who come to the Center.
Each child receiving vision treatment at the Center will have
an individualized program that meets his or her unique needs. This program may include activities such as:
- Tracking moving objects
- Engaging with a object at midline to improve convergance
- HART Chart and Infinity Walk to address tracking problems
- Astronaut Training to enhance vestibular, auditory and visual interactions
